Three questions to ask yourself before building your site

All too often, we see great brands displaying fantastic content but doing so on clumsy and difficult to use web sites. We believe that by asking yourself the following three questions before starting the actual web design, your site will be built on solid foundations.

1. What is your purpose?

Before you even begin to think about web design, sit down and outline the exact purpose of your website as a whole. In general, web users are looking to obtain information quickly and you could lose visitors if you make your web pages vague and difficult to navigate. Although these are design issues, to prevent them occurring you need to think clearly about exactly what you want each page to achieve. Simple tools to better communicate your content are well organised headings and sub headings, and the use of bullet points where appropriate.

2. Is it mobile friendly?

It wasn't that long ago that having a mobile optimised website was somewhat of a luxury. It was an added bonus, nice to have but not altogether necessary. Those days are long gone, though. With more and more interactions happening from mobile devices, if your site isn't mobile optimised you are going to be allowing a huge amount of potential traffic to slip through the net.

You have two options with regards to making your site mobile friendly. You can either use a web design with a responsive layout which will automatically adjust to fit different screen widths on different devices. Alternatively, you can build a dedicated mobile site which is specifically optimised for mobile devices.

3. How can people contact you?

It may seem simple but all too often contact information is hidden in the darkest corners of a website, when it should be one of the first things somebody sees. If you are trying to entice a visitor to engage with your website in some way then you need to make it plain and simple for them to do so. In general, people won't hunt for contact details for too long, they will simply move on. Including key contact details in your site's header or footer as well as on the contact page is almost always a good idea.
