5 SEO tips to make your new website flourish

02 Aug 2017

So, you’ve built a brand spanking new website. Now what? Often, businesses don’t realise that the work doesn’t finish after a new website is launched. To ensure the success of your new website, you need to market it properly, and this doesn’t just mean paid-for advertising on Google. Organic search is just as important, and you can succeed at this through a few quick wins with SEO (search engine optimisation). Here are 5 things that you can do to make your new website flourish in organic search.

1. Implement page titles & meta descriptions

Whether your website is hosted on WordPress or Magento or another mainstream CMS, you can easily edit page titles and meta descriptions. Both of these show up in organic search and give a clear indication to both Google and the user about what the page contains. Make sure these are both succinct and contain as much relevant information as possible. This is the welcome mat at the front door of the website; invite your customers in!

2. Improve site speed

Site speed is one of the key signals that Google uses to rank websites highly in search results. If you have a slow website, this creates a bad user experience, and so Google won’t recommend this to users. You can improve your site speed by reducing the size of images, ensuring that your website is able to load large files. This will have a positive impact and may mean better rankings in SERPs.

3. Remove 404 pages

404 pages, or dead pages, also create a bad user experience as users come on to the site and find dead pages, meaning they aren’t getting the product or service they thought they were going to get. This impacts negatively on the website as a whole and is seen as a bad signal for Google. Removing these pages means that users can move around the site without hitting any dead ends.

4. Improve content

Content has always been king. To make sure your website is as useful to the user as possible, you need to make sure that your on-site content is the most informative and useful it can be. Plug-ins like Yoast will mention that content should be at least 350 words in length on each web page, but some websites say that it should be as high as 1000-1500 words. At the end of the day, the more useful content, the better. You should make sure that it is easy to read and useful; don’t try to pack it full just because you want a longer page.

5. Carry out keyword research

Keyword research is a key part of ensuring that your website shows up in the correct search on Google. If you’re a clothing company, you should be using keywords around relevant clothing items, descriptors and brands, and you should be entering these on the pages where they show up. Try not to use obscure names as this means Google won’t know what to rank the page for. Tools like Google Adwords can be used to make a comprehensive list of keywords for you to use in both advertising and on-site content.

With these five things done, your website will be in the best possible position to rank well on Google, meaning more users will find your products or services. For tips on improving your web design, browse the rest of our blog or contact us for advice at Pint Sized Giants today.
