5 problems faced when marketing your construction business

5 problems faced when marketing your construction business

Let’s face it: you didn’t get into the building trade to write copy, make brochures or design your website. You want to be able to do what you do best, and not worry about the marketing, while knowing that business will keep coming in.

1. Differentiating yourself from the competition

Marketing construction can be difficult. There are thousands of other construction companies in the UK and you’re competing to stand out against every business who offers the same services that you do. If you’re not a marketing expert, it can be very easy to sound like a ‘me too.’ You can say ‘quality construction’ or ‘qualified experts’, but so can your competition.

You’re also competing against all those horror stories of the cowboy builder who does a terrible, half-finished job and then skips with the customer’s hard-earned money. It can be incredibly hard to put across your honesty and integrity, and earn a customer’s trust, when every other builder is claiming the same things, especially if your prospect has been burned before.

2. Having the time!

You’re running your business. You’re out there building houses and trying to make sure everything’s invoiced when it should be, all the stock you need is available for the job and the sub-contractors are on time. How on Earth can you find the time to tweet and blog and be mobile-ready?

3. Systems

Do you have a Customer Relations Management system to make sure you follow up on leads? Do you have an editorial calendar for your blog? Analytics to know what’s working and what’s not? Do you know what your return on investment is? Do you have marketing processes?

Again, a lot of this can come back to time to put all that together.

4. Not knowing what to do

Does looking at that list above give you hives? There’s an awful lot to know about marketing any type of business well, especially when you’d much rather be mixing cement or wiring in a new fuse box.

5. Not knowing who to hire for help

There are probably equally as many marketing and digital agencies out there as there are builders, so you need to find the right one, who knows your industry and can understand how to help.

Want help with your marketing or your web design? Here at Pint Sized Giants, we understand the construction industry and have experience of working with clients in a wide range of industries.
